Airolink Internet Security Tips

As an Airolink customer, you should be aware of the possible dangers on the internet. These dangers can be avoided by following some simple tips.

  • 1. Required: Install an antivirus software package. Viruses are pieces of software that can do destructive operations on your computer and our network. We recommend Norton Antivirus 2002. You can download a free trial here. Once installed, use the LiveUpdate feature and get all the latest updates and virus definitions. Remember to do this weekly to get the newest updates. Run a virus scan weekly to ensure your computer is virus-free. Be sure to set it to scan your incoming and outgoing e-mail, as this is the most common ways you can get a virus.

  • 2. Optional: You can install a software firewall on your computer. This will keep the outside world (i.e. the internet) from accessing your computer and stealing information. We recommend Zone Alarm, which is available as a free download from here.

  • 3. Highly recommended: Disable file and printer sharing. If you have this enabled, people can possibly see your files on your computer. During the installation of your Airolink equipment, we disable this, but if your computer has been reloaded, it could be enabled. To disable this, open your control panel, then select Network (or Network Connections in Windows 2000/XP). Then select the TCP/IP protocol for Orinoco or Avaya adapter. Then click on the Bindings tab, then uncheck all settings there except for TCP/IP (if listed). This will disable file and printer sharing on your Orinoco adapter which connects to the internet.

  • 4. These security tips are recommended for Airolink users. Following these tips will keep your computers safer on the internet. If you have any troubles with those software packages, please contact those respective companies.
